The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, pointed to Russia's involvement in an attack that occurred at the fourth nuclear unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A video of the incident showed how a drone caused a fire when it collided with the shelter protecting the radiation zone.
"Last night, a Russian attack drone with a high-power explosive warhead struck the shelter that protected the world from radiation in the destroyed fourth nuclear unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant," Zelensky detailed.
The affected shelter was built in collaboration with other European countries to safeguard the remnants of radioactivity produced by the 1986 nuclear disaster. The Ukrainian president labeled the incident as a terrorist attack and accused Russia of being behind this act.
The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed the drone's impact on the roof of the shelter, although an increase in radiation in the area was ruled out. Zelensky expressed his concern about what he considers a military escalation by Russia, lamenting the situation and denouncing a series of similar attacks in Ukraine.
"This represents a terrorist threat to the whole world (...) Every night, Russia carries out similar attacks against the infrastructure and cities of Ukraine," the president stated. The situation has raised international concern over the intensification of tensions in the region.
