Zelensky Warns of Russia's Intent to Continue War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia does not want to end the war and seeks to take any opportunity to cause even more suffering to Ukraine, following a massive offensive with nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles launched this Saturday. The Ukrainian leader denounced that the attacks deliberately targeted energy and civilian infrastructure on the eve of his trip to the United States, leaving hundreds of thousands of citizens without light or heating. Through the X platform, the head of state firmly stated that "if Russia turns even Christmas and New Year into a time of destroyed homes, burned apartments, and ruined power plants, then this repugnant action can only be answered with truly energetic measures". According to the Argentine News Agency, the offensive, which kept the air alert active for hours in the capital, left a balance of a 47-year-old woman dead and eleven people hospitalized, according to local authorities. In this way, the leader linked the escalation of violence to a constant harassment strategy that seeks to weaken Ukraine's position prior to any instance of international negotiation. The governor of the Kyiv region, Mykola Kalashnikov, specified that approximately 320,000 people were left without electricity due to the explosions. Faced with this scenario, the Ukrainian leader urged Western powers to increase pressure on Moscow, emphasizing that the Kremlin's actions demonstrate a clear intention to "increase its pressure on other countries in the world" through the systematic destruction of national territory. These statements came just before the president departed for Florida to meet with Donald Trump, with whom he will discuss the plan promoted by the United States to stop a conflict that will be four years old in February. Zelensky reaffirmed that the continuation of bombings on strategic points is irrefutable proof that the Russians "do not want to end the war".
