Alarms in Europe were raised due to fears that the United States may have made concessions to Russia without considering Ukraine's interests. Amidst this concern, President Zelensky stated that he would not accept a peace agreement negotiated without Ukraine's participation. These statements were made during a program on NBC.
"Negotiations to stop this ridiculous war have begun," Trump expressed regarding the conflict. However, it was mentioned that it was not "practical" for Ukraine to join NATO and that it would be "unlikely" for it to return to its borders prior to the 2014 invasion.
Ukraine has repeatedly requested to join NATO and has rejected ceding territory as part of a possible peace agreement. Zelensky emphasized his stance by stating: "I would never accept any decision between the United States and Russia regarding Ukraine, never."
Additionally, it was reported that a Russian attack left approximately 100,000 people in Mykolaiv without electricity and that homes were without heating following a drone attack on the city's infrastructure. Meanwhile, the White House announced that Trump held an extensive phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin last Wednesday.
Regarding Ukraine's participation in talks between the United States and Russia to end the war in Ukraine, a source from the Ukrainian government confirmed that Kiev was not invited. Despite a special U.S. envoy to Ukraine mentioning that Kiev would be present at the scheduled talks in Saudi Arabia, it was ultimately indicated that no Ukrainian delegation would attend.
In light of this situation, major European powers will hold an emergency meeting in Paris to address the situation, as they fear being excluded from the negotiations. European leaders such as British Keir Starmer, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission will meet with Macron at this summit.
Despite the importance of the situation, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that the summit among the leaders should not be "dramatized."
