Zaporizhzhia: A Flashpoint in the Peace Talks
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe's largest, sits on the front lines of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, turning it into both a symbol and a hazard.
As part of a proposed cease‑fire deal, Russia and Ukraine exchanged proposals for control of the plant. However, disagreements over who will manage its technical safety remain.
Experts from international bodies warn that the reactor’s risk rises if it is not maintained properly. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is first in line to monitor safety.
"We cannot allow the plant to fall into the hands of people lacking necessary skills," said Ukraine’s Energy Minister. A Russian representative responded by stressing the need for "coordination."
Regardless of the disputes, a peaceful resolution is crucial to avoid an environmental and energy crisis in the region.
